about

This is one that I'm definitely interested in getting people's opinions on. I've only played it for a handful of people so far. This song is an attempt to bring the "holy shit" concept full circle. I think that human beings are the perfect example of holy shit and we can contain everything good and bad in this world.

Every day we are bringing life on this planet closer to destruction, but every day people are inventing and fighting for solutions and alternatives. We are constantly seeing news (some more trustworthy than others) that we have passed another "point of no return" and it just seems too big and too overwhelming to deal with. It feels like all we can do is pause for a moment before continuing to scroll through our feeds. I strongly believe, I strongly have to believe, that we have the potential to make things better. Today feels extra poignant as we see the struggle of American Indians defending their rights at Standing Rock against the Dakota Access Pipeline. To add to this, it has been underreported that in September there was an oil spill in Alabama of 250,000 gallons, causing the Governor to declare a state of emergency.

I don't have all the answers, but I think I know enough history. I know that this country has worked to destroy the world (both culturally and ecologically) that existed before it moved in and claimed it as its own. I know that we have continued to use up resources at an increasing and unnecessary rate while blaming the poor for overpopulation. I know that colonialism, imperialism, and neoliberal globalization have enforced a status quo of profit over people and environment and a race to exploit whatever country has the least legal boundaries. I know that throughout all of this, there has always been a culture of resistance and a movement of those who fight back in whatever ways they knew how.

We need to step up where we can and we need to listen to those who are being affected by environmental issues all over the planet. If a god is an entity that builds the world that allows us to exist, then it is our duty and responsibility to step up and be the gods for those coming after us. What will we leave behind? I refuse to believe that this is something we should leave our most powerful and wealthy to decide. I refuse to let them be the gods of the new world. Maybe I am being dramatic and maybe at times I'm being a hypocrite, but l promise to never let myself forget the part I play in this world and my responsibility to ask what I can do to help those most in need.
